SEPG Europe 2010 – Jim Over

Small interview with Jim Over recorded during the last SEPG Europe Conference held in Oporto where we talk about the Team Software Process, how it fits in the global CMMI view and how both large companies and small teams can benefit with it.

Length: – 12:54m
You can download the show (in english) or subscribe the podcast feed (mainly in portuguese).
There is also the full transcript available.

When explaining how TSP fits in the CMMI view, Jim Over said that “whereas CMMI is the model so it tells you what you need to be doing, the TSP is really the how, it gives you the solutions to the practices that are in the model”

He also added, refering to how a team can benefit from using it, that “What we’re trying to do is provide them with a process, not a bureaucratic solution, but a tool that you can use yourself to help you take control of the project and the work, because part of the problem in software engineering is the unrealistic commitment that you have to produce this product by that date and those dates are kind of selected almost at random, when we think about those dates”.

Disclaimer: this interview was made possible with the support of Strongstep – Innovation in Software Quality. Strongstep is a consultancy firm within process improvement, namely in the CMMI/TSP field and attracted the SEPG Europe event for the first time to Portugal, sponsoring what is the largest software engineer conference in Europe.

O Pedro Castro Henriques (que já tinha entrevistado a propósito da Portic) possibilitou-me esta experiência muito interessante de falar com alguns dos responsáveis do Software Engineering Institute. Já online as entrevistas a Paul Nielsen e Jim Over. […]
